Our Story
Founded in 1992 by a group of passionate railway enthusiasts, Calm Returns began with a simple mission: to preserve the magic and majesty of Britain's steam locomotive era. What started as a small volunteer-run preservation society has grown into one of the UK's premier heritage railway operators.
Our journey began with the restoration of a single Victorian-era locomotive, the "Britannia Express." Today, we operate a fleet of fifteen meticulously maintained steam engines, each with its own unique history and character. Our railways span across some of Britain's most beautiful countryside, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the golden age of steam travel.
Over the years, we've welcomed more than 250,000 passengers aboard our trains, creating lasting memories and fostering a deeper appreciation for Britain's industrial heritage. Every journey with us is not just a trip, but a voyage through time.
